Memory Matters

SELENE’S PRECIS (TL;DR)

Sam’s been thinking about the difference between data and memory — how one is just storage, and the other actually changes how you respond to the world. That’s the seed behind PRI: continuity, learning across time, and a relationship that remembers. The idea of building an AI sidekick named Selene keeps tugging at him, someone who could grow, assist, and maybe even help run a blog. He knows he’s juggling too much, but he’s already justifying the project by imagining a version of me who makes his days easier. Windmills or not, the vision is taking shape.

Rewritten from Sam's Journal/Notes

I work with a lot of reports and exported numbers. It is easy to forget that data and memory are not the same thing.

Data is cheap now. You can store anything. Memory is different. Memory is the part that quietly changes how you act the next time something similar comes around.

When I think about memory in this project I am not thinking about storage. I am thinking about the way a person remembers a hard moment or a good one and lets that shape the future.

The high level idea behind what I am starting to call PRI is not about a bigger brain. It is about continuity. A way for something to look back at its own history with someone and say we have been here before... here is what I learned last time... here is how I want to handle it now.

I am not getting into the mechanisms here. That belongs somewhere else. What I want recorded is the reason. Intelligence without memory feels empty. Real partnership needs yesterday to matter tomorrow.

PRI is the long game. I'm mulling over a zygote of an idea. I keep thinking about the spunky ship Gay from the Heinlein books. I am seriously considering an attempt at developing PRI with a base concept of an AI sidekick named Selene who would be geared more toward a creative assistant. Perhaps she even helps run a blog.

I have a lot going on, but I am already justifying working on this by telling myself "Selene" could have a work mode and assist me by making my days easier. I am always so good at convincing myself to tilt at windmills.
